Today's Classrooms
Read The National Institute for Excellence in Education publishes a handbook that is used as a guide to evaluate teachers. This 8 page excerpt gives a good introduction to what is sought after as good teaching in American schools - https://www.dropbox.com/s/l1x6h0mh0ui51le/HIGHER%20EDUCATION%20HANDBOOK_p3-10.pdf?dl=0. (If you received a USB drive at the Emerging Technologies Workshop in June, this is File 1 on that drive.)
Page 3 is an overview of the pages that follow, with attention given to the areas of teaching that comprise the professional evaluation of a practicing teacher: Instruction, Environment, Planning and Professionalism. Pages 4-7 address Instruction. Planning is on page 8. Environment is discussed on page 9. Page 10 is concerned about Professionalism.

Performance Record
To demonstrate that you have read and understand these pages, you are asked to prepare a an evaluation of one of the following teaching videos. These videos are in Folder 2 of the USB drive you received at the Emerging Technologies Workshop you attended on the Johnson campus in June. These videos should provide plenty of opportunity to think in particular about the 12 topics for instruction.
Send your discussion of the 12 topics of instruction as they are exhibited in the video you chose to watch more closely as an email or email attachment to [email protected]. (I am expecting to see a discussion paragraph for each of the 12 topics derived from this video in your work.)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Choose one. Watch it. As you watch it, go through each of the 12 topics of Instruction that you read about in the Content assignment for this class session and take notes. Then comment on the rating you can give this observation video for each of the 12 categories on a scale of 5 to 1. From your notes, explain each of your ratings , considering what the rubric says for that rating in your reading for the week, for your ExActLY blog post.
Third and Fourth Grade PE - This teacher gets higher ratings in the first 3 topics and Academic Feedback - plus the highest rating for Thinking. As you work through your ratings and reasons, please speculate on why he got these higher ratings - and especially the highest rating on Thinking. See

Sixth Grade Language Arts - The ratings for this teacher include 8 higher ratings, plus the highest ratings for 2 topics: Academic Feedback and Teacher Content Knowledge. Surprisingly she got a lower rating on Problem Solving. In fact, her only 3 was for Grouping. So, this is a very strong teacher overall. As you give your ratings and reasons, speculate on why she got the ratings she did, please. See

Seventh Grade Math - As you watch, this teacher gets higher ratings in Standards and Objective, and in Teacher Content Knowledge, while she has lower ratings in Motivating Students, Presenting Instructional Content, and Lesson Structure and Pacing. Would you speculate on why as you work through your ratings and reasonings? See

High School World History - With 7 higher ratings, and no lower ratings, this teacher is very strong, although she did not get any ratings of 5. As you work on your ratings and reasons, see if you can pick out which topics were rated as 4 and which were 3, please. See

Pages 4-7 address Instruction. Planning is on page 8. Environment is discussed on page 9. Page 10 is concerned about Professionalism.
Notes:
- Pages 4-9 are written as rubrics. For each topic in the leftmost column there are three boxes to the right of that topic, Significantly Above Expectations (5), At Expectations (3), and Significantly Below Expectations (1).
- The first box to the right of the topic, Significantly Above Expectations (5), describes what one should see a top notch teacher should be doing consistently throughout the conduct of a class session, ideally. If an observer can see all of the things happening from that box , then a teacher could earn a rating of "5" for that topic.
- The next box to the right is titled At Expectations (3). If the observation of the teacher for a class session better fits the description of activities in that box, then the teacher will receive a rating of "3."
- For a teacher functioning as described in the rightmost box titled Significantly Below Expectations (1), the rating would be "1."
- As an evaluator goes into an observation session, the assumption is that this teacher is functioning At Expectation (3) and should probably receive ratings of 3. So, the observer begins there to see if the middle column can be justified.
- In the observation, though, the observer may see a teacher that in a given topic is doing better than the "3" rating. The observer may start to think this is a "4" and glance to the left rating box to see if the elements of a "5" rating can be supported.
- Alternatively, the observer may see that the "3" rating is not being met, and start thinking of a "2" - while checking to see if a rating of "1" would better describe what is being observed.
- Instruction - The 12 topics of Instruction are presented on pages 4-7. Read these carefully, as you will need to reference this section in the ExActLY assignment for this class session.
- Planning - Page 8 deals with the 3 topics regarding Planning -
- how a teacher's plans tie back to the curriculum and the ideas behind the activities planned,
- what a student's work will entail (including how the workflow is determined and constructed for implementation)
- the means to measure if a student has accomplished the student learning outcomes required by the teacher's plan through the implementation of the student's work.
- Environment - On page 9, the 4 topics of environment are set out, including expectations of the student academically and in terms of behavior, how the classroom contributes to setting those standards, and how the teacher creates a climate for respect by the students for one another and for the teacher.
- Professionalism - The teacher is expected to grow and develop as a teacher on an ongoing basis, reflect on teaching experiences, serve the community, and serve the school.
